MANAGING UP: INSIGHT UP. CLARITY DOWN.
Managing up is not about keeping your boss happy or passing every problem upward. It is about helping senior leaders understand what is happening while giving your team the clarity it needs to act. Your manager needs insight. Your team needs clarity. Strong leaders provide both.
CREATE INSIGHT UP
Senior leaders cannot see everything you see. Give them context before they have to ask. Share what is happening, what is working, what needs attention, and what decision or support is needed. Raise risks early. Bring the information that helps them make a sound decision.
CREATE CLARITY DOWN
Your team should not have to interpret a decision or guess what happens next. Explain what matters, why it matters, who owns the next step, and what good looks like. Clarity gives people enough direction to act without bringing every question back to you.
BRING RECOMMENDATIONS, NOT JUST PROBLEMS
When you move an issue upward, explain what is happening, why it matters, what you have already considered, and what you recommend. You may not have the final answer. That is fine. A recommendation shows that you thought through the issue before handing it to someone else.
